Does constant shoulder pain restrict your movement and limit your activities? When shoulder pain affects your quality of life and prevents you from doing what you enjoy, the team of orthopaedic specialists at Southern Joint Replacement Institute can help you get your life back.

We offer advanced diagnosis and both surgical and non-surgical treatment options that improve mobility, reduce pain and increase function.

Anatomy of the shoulder

Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint. The “ball” is located at the top of your upper arm. It sits in a shallow indentation, called a socket, in your shoulder blade.

Your shoulder consists of three bones:

  • Collarbone (clavicle)
  • Shoulder blade (scapula)
  • Upper arm bone (humerus)

A smooth substance called articular cartilage encases the areas where your shoulder bones touch. This provides protection and allows your shoulder to move easily without pain. A layer of tissues called the synovial membrane covers all the other surfaces. This membrane creates fluid that lubricates your shoulder and reduces friction.

Tendons and muscles surround your shoulder joint, providing support and stability. Your shoulder’s structure allows it to rotate with a greater range of motion than any other joint in your body.
